HREC 147 Beginning Kayaking
Beginning Kayaking introduces students to the exciting world of whitewater kayaking. In a classroom environment, students learn kayak safety, environmental etiquette, equipment essentials, fundamentals of river reading, and basic concepts for kayak trips. Through direct participation in a controlled environment (swimming pool and slow moving water) students learn basic kayaking skills, including strokes (sweep, draw, scull), bracing (low and back), wet exit, boat lean, basic trip and lab fee required.

Beginning Kayaking introduces students to the exciting world of whitewater kayaking. In a classroom environment, students learn kayak safety, environmental etiquette, equipment essentials, fundamentals of river reading, and basic concepts for kayak trips. Through direct participation in a controlled environment (swimming pool and slow moving water) students learn basic kayaking skills, including strokes (sweep, draw, scull), bracing (low and back), wet exit, boat lean, basic trip and lab fee required.

- Describe the Idaho state laws impacting recreational whitewater activities
- Distinguish different types of kayaks (whitewater, flatwater, recreational)
- Identify proper water sports etiquette around other sportsmen and watercraft
- List 8 items of essential whitewater kayaking equipment and identify which are legally required
- Be able to list 8 items of essential whitewater kayaking equipment and identify which are legally required
- Demonstrate the proper technique for wet-exiting an overturned whitewater kayak
- Demonstrate the proper use and re-packing of a whitewater rescue rope
- Demonstrate the technique for assisting and rescuing a swimmer in moving water

e) Rescuing others, throw ropes, retrieving paddlers and gear
f) Safety rules for whitewater kayakers
g) Proper river behavior and etiquette for kayakers
h) Laws and regulations impacting kayakers
i) Kayak self-support for extended trips
j) Where to access river flow and water temperature information online
VI. Delivery Methodologies
Required Assignments
1 Demonstrate in the pool five basic paddle strokes
2 Wet exit from kayak with spray skirt
3 Participate in a pool obstacle course
4 Team-rescue a swimmer and gear in water
5 Accurately throw and re-pack a kayak throw rope
6 Load, secure, and unload a kayak from a vehicle roof rack
7 Complete a final exam with a minimum score of 70 of 100 possible points.
