Program Mission, Description, and Outcomes
Mission:
The mission of the Paramedic program is to provide students with the necessary training and practices to deliver high quality, caring patient care in the pre-hospital environment, emphasizing student success and embracing excellence and diversity.
Description:
The program trains students in the specialized and advanced skills and techniques required for emergency in-the-field pre-hospital care. Instruction covers IV therapy, advanced cardiac life support, advanced care skills for the patient in shock and telemetry and communications. It also provides additional information and skills practice to allow you to become proficient in the care of respiratory, medical and traumatic emergencies. The specific purpose of this program is to meet minimum requirements set by the Florida Department of Health, Bureau of Emergency Medical Services to allow you to take the Florida state certification examination for paramedic. Graduates of the program are eligible to take the Florida state board examination for paramedic. Graduates are qualified to work as advanced care providers on ambulances, in hospital emergency rooms, intensive care units and emergency helicopter transport agencies.
Note: In order to take this program of study, students must have proof of completion of an Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) course. Florida certification as an EMT must be obtained prior to the second semester of the program. Credits earned in this program may be counted in the Emergency Medical Services AS degree.
Program Accreditation: The Daytona State College EMS Program is approved by the Florida Department of Health, Bureau of Emergency Medical Services, as meeting all statutory requirements set forth in Florida Statute 401. The Daytona State College EMS Program is accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP) upon the recommendation of the Committee on Accreditation of Educational Programs for the Emergency Medical Services Professions (CoAEMSP). Additional Admission Requirements

Attendance at the EMS Orientation session is mandatory.

Applications are accepted until courses are full or the stated application deadline, whichever comes first. The due dates for applications are available on the EMS homepage: www.daytonastate.edu/ses/ems.

An early application window will be made available only to students who meet the following criteria:

Agency sponsored students with an agency sponsorship letter

Agency employed students needing licensure for advancement opportunities

Students currently enrolled in Daytona State College’s Fire Fighter program (all application deadlines must be met)

Satisfactory results of a Florida Department of Law Enforcement and FBI background check.

Students will be required to wear uniforms.

Students will be held accountable for the policy and procedures of the EMS program as outlined in the EMS student policy/rule book, as well as the college student handbook.
Paramedic program admission as a Transfer Student
Students wishing to transfer into the paramedic program from outside of Daytona State College may be considered for transfer so long as they have completed the first semester of paramedic school, the program they are transferring out of is currently CoAEMSP accredited, all previous files, clinical performance, and coursework, can be validated by the program manager of Daytona State College, and do not have more than one major semester absent from enrollment in the paramedic program they are transferring from. Transfer of credits will be consistent with the existing transfer policies of Daytona State College. No credit will be provided for any semesters not successfully completed and therefore may require transferring students to repeat previous coursework from a semester where a final completion grade has not been awarded.
Careers
Paramedic Graduates have been employed at the local public safety agencies, theme parks and local hospitals.

Program Length: The typical length of this program is three (3) semesters (36 weeks) for a full-time student, with 95% graduating within 3 semesters for 2014-15. The Florida Education and Training Placement Information Program (FETPIP) lists the placement rate (2013-14) for this field at 46%.

Credits earned at another accredited institution may be eligible for transfer to Daytona State College, if the student possesses a current National Registry EMT license.
