AM7102 Neurobiology and Medical Management of Pain

In this course, the mechanisms, physiology and pathology of pain are investigated. The course examines the way in which pain signals are coded and processed in the nervous system and focuses on the study of inflammation, neuronal plasticity development, nociceptors, molecular identity, signaling mechanisms, and ionic channels that are involved in the generation, modulation and propagation of action potential in all types of excitable cells. Pharmacological management of pain is discussed including pharmacotherapy, adverse effects and toxicology. Included are discussions of analgesics such as non-steroid anti-inflammatories from various categories including paracetamol, opioids and opiate-like drugs, corticosteroids, and drugs which relieve pain due to single causes or specific pain syndromes, not classified as analgesics. This is a hybrid course.
